Frequently asked questions

Got questions before jumping in the water? Here are the most common things beginners and progressing bodyboarders ask our instructors.

Do I need fins to bodyboard in San Diego?

Yes, swim fins are essential for catching unbroken waves, navigating currents, and generating kick power to match wave speed.

What size board should I choose?

As a general rule, stand the board on the ground; the nose should reach roughly to your belly button for optimal buoyancy and control.

What wetsuit thickness do I need locally?

A 3/2mm fullsuit works great for spring, fall, and cooler summer days. For winter swells from December through March, a 4/3mm suit is best.

Can total beginners join coaching sessions?

Absolutely. We start with basic ocean safety, rip current identification, and wave timing in calm, waist-deep conditions.

Where are your instruction sessions held?

We coach primarily along Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Shores, choosing locations based on daily swell and wind conditions.

Is bodyboarding easier than stand-up surfing?

Bodyboarding offers a faster learning curve for getting rides on day one, while still presenting endless technical progression for advanced waves.

What gear is provided during a lesson?

We supply demo bodyboards, leashes, and swim fins sized to you. Just bring your swimwear, sunscreen, towel, and water.

How do I read San Diego wave forecasts?

Check our San Diego surf guide for local tips on interpreting swell direction, tide windows, and morning offshore wind patterns.
